Ah
Pretty sure I’m deleting my tumblr very soon. If you wanna stay in touch and we’re not internet friends elsewhere, let me know. This thing has become less of a place to blog and discuss science but more of a time sink and brain destroyer. I’ll probably start up that other, slightly more legit, blog sometime soon.
kthxbye

Micro
I’m really excited about school this semester, on top of all of the other great things happening this year. I’m finally taking General Microbiology. As I learn about medicine and biology, in general, I’ve come to realize that it’s absolutely essential (for me, at least) to understand the biology of microorganisms- a huge part of medicine (one which can send you into a...

“And while there is nothing supernatural about human medicine, it’s not in any way mundane. It’s beautiful, fascinating, at times even mysterious.” Peter Lipson

Organized
Currently stressing the hell out this week. This project I started over the summer with some medical students around the country has started to fall apart. Partially my fault because I forgot that people like to disappear when I need them to help me with relatively easy tasks.
I’d like to start writing on here more instead of reblogging goofy bullshit again soon (nothing wrong with...

Tonight
Giving a presentation for my friends about all the exciting stuff I’ve learned over the semester or so about the bacteria that inhabit our gut.
This is what I do with my time off. Ugh.
(note: I’m not the only one doing this- xysmas.tumblr.com and others will be presenting on more interesting things like female ejaculation and such)

Arguments and skepticism
When arguing with someone, it’s apparently best just to ignore every point the opposition makes and keep charging with your opinion than to re-evaluate your thoughts or consider any new information- you can stick to your guns forever and live in a fantasy world that you created! (regardless of how extremely toxic or absurdly pollyanna-like it may be)
I really do not enjoy arguing with...

I should be working on my presentation...
So, Bruce Lipton’s name has been brought up twice around me in the last week. Someone posted a youtube video of a ten minute interview with him this morning. More or less, he’s got this idea that our attitudes can make huge changes to our bodies down to the level of gene expression.
Of course, I should probably look more into what he has to say, but so far it seems pretty clear...

Doctor to patient, naturopath to doctor

Rule of Thumb (not scientific, yet)
Surround yourself with as many people that 1) think you’re hilarious and 2) you don’t think are annoying. You’ll be set forever.

I’ve just agreed to have a discussion about alternative medicine vs (real) medicine with an old acquaintance that has “seen the light” and now subscribes to integrative/holistic/alt med ideas.
It’ll be interesting to see what she has to say. She’s been through a lot. I really hope she doesn’t start talking about Deepak Chopra and/or Andrew Weil.
Let’s...

The treatment of prostate cancer (PCa) has seen significant progress in recent years. Unfortunately, these treatments are not perfect. Different treatment options are available depending on the progress of the disease, but all come with varying side effects that significantly reduce the overall quality of life of the patient (Debes et al 2004, Korfage et al...
Just to let you know, I will be posting a paper I co-authored on prostate cancer later today as per request by my good friend Aaron. It’s a few pages long and pretty formal. I enjoyed writing it and the other author busted her ass to come up with some clever techniques and dummy gene sequences, so it’d be nice for it to be seen/skimmed/etc by someone other than our professor.
Plus,...

When I was much younger, I thought we understood so much more about how things work in the universe. The more I learn about science, I find that things are far more complex than I ever imagined. Instead of feeling defeated or intimidated by the universe and fill those gaps with magic/mysticism, I hope we can figure as much out as possible before we destroy ourselves or fail to move out before...

Apparently, several studies have shown that fatherhood reduces testosterone production. This is an awesome hypothesis, especially after this lecture I sat through today that talked all about the major costs and benefits for high levels of testosterone in men (not just causing baldness and compromising the immune system). If I can find enough supportive studies, I think I have a term paper for my...
