I’m really excited about school this semester, on top of all of the other great things happening this year. I’m finally taking General Microbiology. As I learn about medicine and biology, in general, I’ve come to realize that it’s absolutely essential (for me, at least) to understand the biology of microorganisms- a huge part of medicine (one which can send you into a panic/depression if you think too much about) is dedicated to fighting and preventing infections. That is compounded by new research like Mark Lyte’s work in microbial endocrinology, the discovery of our microbiome, recent attempts to use viruses to deactivate antibiotic resistance genes, etc.
I’m also taking a few classes offered by the school of public health. I’m hoping they will rekindle my passion for healthcare activism and patient advocacy that has somewhat waned lately (though I’ve enjoyed all of the extra sleep).
